KELLY WOODS - YOUNG VOLUNTEER OF THE YEAR (FINAL 3)
As one of our up and coming young volunteers Kelly has certainly got off to a flying start, a stunning achievement when you consider that her year began with bitter disappointment.
At the beginning of the year Kelly broke her ankle an injury that delayed the start to her playing season and meant that she would not be able to play in her County Squad. What would have been a disappointment to many, Kelly turned into an opportunity to learn new skills and attended a Beginner Umpire Course, on crutches. She remained actively involved in the set engaging in any activity that the ankle would permit her to, at times feeding back her observations to her fellow players from the sidelines.
Once the ankle had healed, Kelly umpired High Five matches in the Greater Manchester Junior League on a regular basis, passing her Beginner award and progressing onto the C Award. She has encouraged her peers to have a go at umpiring and has recruited two new young umpires who also passed their tests this year. Kelly has also been invaluable at club level, coaching younger players on a regular basis.
"Her attitude and drive have been an inspiration to some of her colleagues and an invaluable help to the number of Netball organisations with which she is involved."
Mavis Yates (Hon Secretary Greater Manchester County Netball Association
Kelly Woods was nominated as Trafford Volunteer of the Year at 15 years old during a presentation evening held in November 2005. In January 2006 she was invited to Greater Manchester Sports Awards evening but was not as successful but what an experience for such a young girl.
Kelly has forwarded her application to become a volunteer during the Commonwealth Games, London 2012.
In July 2006 Kelly successfuly passed her 'C' umpiring award.
Kelly has helped out by both coaching and umpiring at Trafford Junior Netball Club with various age groups and is continuing to do so. Kelly also assisted the coach for the Greater Manchester Youth Games held at City of Manchester Stadium in July.
